Mayor selected as result of unanimous vote by Board of Directors

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announced today that he has received notification from the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) Board of Directors that they have unanimously voted to award him their 2012 All-State School Committee Award for Urban Districts.  The award is presented to individuals every year to honor their contributions to the lives of children within their district.  Mayor Curtatone was chosen from nominees from 57 urban districts across the Commonwealth.

In their submission, the Somerville School Committee praised Mayor Curtatone as a force for innovation and growth within the district throughout his nine years as an ex-officio member of the Committee.  Especially recognized was his Shape Up Somerville initiative, his use of hard data to guide decision making, and his commitment to help advance the educational mission of the Somerville Public Schools as a member of the School Committee.

“Mayor Curtatone is an enthusiastic and effective advocate and champion for Somerville,” said Tony Pierantozzi, Superintendent of the Somerville Public Schools.  “His leadership and vision for the City are matched by an unwavering commitment to Somerville youth, public education, and to providing the necessary resources and opportunities to give youth a healthy and productive start.”

“The Somerville School Committee was elated to learn that our nomination of Mayor Curtatone was unanimously approved by the MASC Board of Directors,” said Mary Jo Rossetti, Vice-Chairperson of the Somerville School Committee and President-Elect of the MASC.  “Mayor Curtatone’s style of leadership by example is now recognized by school committees statewide, and we could not be more proud.”

The award will be presented to Mayor Curtatone at a reception in Hyannis, MA on Thursday, November 8.
