Holiday Inn statement From Mayor Curtatone

On December 28, 2012, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Thursday night Somerville Police were called to the Holiday Inn in Somerville after a  fight broke out between 10 to 12 women. Once police arrived they dispersed a crowd of  over 100 people.

The following statement is from Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone in regards to this morning’s incident at the Holiday Inn.

“In light of the early morning incident at the Holiday Inn Somerville, I want to assure residents, community members and business owners alike neither I nor the Somerville Police Department take this – or other similar incidents – lightly, and that we are taking all available steps to prevent something of this nature from occurring within our borders in the future.

Somerville has been lauded for its innovation, our incredible and diverse restaurant scene, our various artist communities and so many more vibrant and positive issues.  I refuse to let incidents like this cast a negative shadow over all that our community has accomplished, and therefore we’ve already taken interim steps to prevent future issues.  Earlier today, our Neighborhood Impact Team – comprised of representatives from Inspectional Services, Fire, Police, and Health Departments – was dispatched to the Holiday Inn to determine if further action is needed at that site, which has resulted in the temporary revocation of Night Games’ Certificate of Occupancy pending public safety-related repairs.  As the Somerville Police continue their investigation of this issue, we will also keep our Licensing Board apprised and expect that this establishment’s license will be reviewed at its next regular meeting.  We have been in contact with the management of the Holiday Inn, who have agreed to cancel its New Year’s Eve event at Night Games pending the outcome of these discussions.”

ABOUT TIME! According to Boston News Media this event was run by the same individuals that had the big incident at the home in Milton a few months ago.

There have been other incidents at the Holiday Inn, there needs to be more Police Detail Officers as well as Fire Dept Detail personnel on scene to insure that there is no repeat of the horrible incident in RI, as the Management of Holiday Inn have proven their incompetence by putting the $$$$ before safety and crowd control which needs to be strictly enforced.

The mayor is right on this one, there are plenty of great good businesses in this city that are responsible, abide by the rules and make Somerville a great place to visit and enjoy, let’s continue to support them and dump the offenders.

What I’m wondering is why Holiday Inn corporate doesn’t keep a tighter rein on its local franchisee. Repeated incidents of this kind tarnish the national brand.

  3. A Moore says:

Ron, having owned a franchise(Not Holiday Inn) at one time it’s usually the case if you are making them money they don;t get much involved in what you are doing. I also worked for a company that owned a few Holiday Inn franchises. It’s totally about the money. There is much one can get away with as long as you are paying your fees to the head honchos. Mostly you are paying for the use of their name. The big red flag is how many complaints ot headquarters that will cause some small acton from the higher ups. As for this type of service I can’t remember if this ist run seperatly outside of the franchise. I didn’t have anything to do with that part so I don’t know for sure.

How unexpected! Put together a bunch of drunk people and that is what you will get…

I am deeply saddened that in the past couple of months the Holiday Inn has had crowd control problems and this is a problem that occurs quiet often. I wish that at the next license board meeting strict action will be taken towards the Holiday Inn. They had a problem which spilled into the streets of East Somervill back in September and now this other incident Thursday night. This is can not be tolerated.

  6. Dicky Bird says:

If I remember correctly? did not other people of note run parties there but now lets growl as we are purer than “virgin driven snow” Super Bowl parties, Police problems, close it down and let it become a church??

  7. Elio, I agree with you. I know members of the Board of Aldermen were very upset about the incident in September and have asked the Licensing Commission to work in closer conjunction with them to get requests by known trouble establishments denied. There is so much more that can be done!

  8. Ward-1 Resident says:

Elio and Courtney, see latest news article. Mayor Curtatone and Alderman Bastardi shuts down Holiday Inn indefinately! Mayor Joe and Alderman Maureen on the job — they both have my full support. This is representation we can coount on. Thank you.

  9. Ron Newman says:

Ward-1 Resident: they shut down the Night Games Lounge, not the whole Holiday Inn.

  10. Correction says:

Ron, you are correct, as usual.
