While monitoring vehicle traffic in the area of Lowell and Alpine Streets last Sunday, a patrol officer heard the loud roar of an automobile engine being revved and shortly thereafter saw the vehicle speed past him at approximately 80 mph.

The officer gave chase in his cruiser and soon located the vehicle, stopped in the middle of Medford St., unoccupied, and showing signs of severe damage to its front end.

Another vehicle was spotted nearby, showing signs of rear end damage, while two occupants inside the car appeared to be injured.

As the officer exited his cruiser he was summoned by four men who was escorting a fifth man, Marcus Demoura, 21, of Malden, towards the policeman.

The four witnesses reportedly told the officer that they had witnessed Demoura’s crashing his vehicle, then getting out of the car and attempt to run away.

The witnesses caught up with Demoura and restrained him, eventually bringing him to the police officer on the scene, according to reports.

When asked by the officer where he thought he was going, Demoura reportedly said that his brakes gave out and he was going to find his friend.

When asked to show his driver’s license, Demoura reportedly admitted that he only had a learner’s permit.

The officer on the scene asked Demoura whether or not he or anyone else had been injured in the crash, and Demoura reportedly said that he was unhurt and that he was alone in the crashed vehicle.

Demoura was then placed under arrest and charged with leaving the scene of personal injury, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.

A complaint was also filed against the registered owner of the crashed vehicle for allowing its use by an unlicensed driver.
