A Somerville drug suspect who fled from police and allegedly swallowed the evidence was held at Cambridge Hospital on Friday and treated for cocaine and oxycontin ingestion.

Drug unit cops followed a man they knew as a drug user from the Clarendon Hill housing development to Rubenson Cherilus, 24, of Glendale Avenue, waiting in a 2006 Honda, police said.

Cherilus and the man drove a short distance making several quick turns and brief stops, police said.

Detectives identified themselves as police and signaled for Cherilus to stop and pull over, police said.

Cherilus started to stop along Cameron Avenue then accelerated his motor vehicle turning right on to Glendale Road, police said. The defendant stopped and momentarily parked the motor vehicle to the right side of the roadway.

Police then approached Cherilus on foot. He allegedly placed the motor vehicle in gear and accelerated "at an unreasonable speed along Glendale Road," police said.

While travelling along Elmwood Street observations were made of Cherilus reaching with his right hand behind him, police said.

Cherilus' route of travel was blocked by assisting marked patrol units and he stopped his motor vehicle to the right side of the roadway along Elmwood Street, police said.

Once the defendants motor vehicle was secured Cherilus was removed from the motor vehicle at which time he physically resisted efforts to handcuff him and place him into custody, police said.

A search of Cherilus' car turned up a large sum of cash and one green colored 80 miligram Oxycontin tablet.

Cherilus told officers he was sick and he was transported to Cambridge Hospital where he was treated and held for the ingestion of cocaine and oxycontin, police said.

Cherilus was arrested and charged with possession.
