Somerville street sweeping regulations in effect April 2 through December 31; New “Somerville Sweeper” system announced for Somerville residents

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the Somerville Traffic and Parking Department remind all residents that regular street sweeping schedules will resume beginning Monday, April 2 and continue through December 31, 2012.

On designated street sweeping days, vehicles must be moved to one side of the street, as noted on signs posted on each street. The penalty for not complying with street sweeping parking regulations is a $50 fine. Mayor Curtatone also announced that for the first time, Somerville residents may sign up to receive automatic alerts through a “Somerville Sweeper” service. The new email notification system was developed by the City’s IT Department after some residents complained that the long-established Boston Sweeper service was not sufficiently accurate. “Ultimately, residents are responsible for following the rules as posted on their streets,” said Curtatone. ”But Somerville Sweeper should be a helpful reminder. Residents may sign up by visiting www.somervillema.gov/sweeper, or by calling 311.
